UK Government’s benefit changes are a ‘social atrocity’

January 16, 2013

A Welsh Government Minister has launched a blistering attack on benefit changes being introduced by the UK Government – labelling them a “social atrocity” that amounted to neo-Thatcherite reforms “at its foulest”.

Housing Minister Huw Lewis has warned of an impending crisis in Wales in terms of housing, with planned changes to entitlement to benefits having a “destructive, destabilising effect” on entire communities in deprived areas.

Mr Lewis said the Welsh Government was unable to intervene or provide alternative accommodation if tens of thousands of families faced the prospect of leaving their homes, because the UK Government has “its hand on our throats” and was “strangling” public spending, plus smaller housing stock didn’t exist.

It came after First Minister Carwyn Jones warned that UK benefit changes amounted to “social engineering”, and that there was a danger that less expensive areas of Wales could see public services in poorer areas come under increasing pressure as people are forced to move from more costly areas.
